The best inverter brands in Australia.
Will it take a battery later without a swap?
The inverter decides what you can add later. Check it's battery-ready, has enough MPPTs for your roof, and copes with heat.
71 ranges from 9 brands, scored from manufacturer datasheets. Data checked 16 September 2026.

How to choose inverters.
Hybrid, all-in-one or solar-only?
A hybrid inverter runs panels and a battery from one box, so adding storage later is a plug-in job.
All-in-one systems stack the inverter and battery together. A solar-only (string) inverter is the cheapest way to run panels, but adding a battery later means a second inverter or a swap.
Why CSIP-AUS matters
Most networks now require inverters that can talk to them and limit exports on demand. Without it, your export may be capped at a very low level.
Ask your installer to confirm the model is on your network's approved list.
Oversizing explained
Panels rarely hit their nameplate output, so pairing more panels than inverter capacity is normal. The rebate rules allow up to 133%.
Our 'room for more panels' figure is the most the inverter itself accepts. Anything from 150% up gets full marks; many hybrids take 200%, which mainly helps when a battery soaks up the extra.
Backup in a blackout
A battery alone doesn't keep the lights on. The inverter or a separate gateway must isolate your home from the grid.
Each hybrid's spec table shows the backup output its datasheet states, if any.
Rebates on inverters.
Included in solar STCs
Every state
The inverter is part of the system the STC discount is calculated on. There is no separate inverter rebate.
Battery rebate readiness
Every state
If you add a battery later, it must be VPP-capable to qualify for the federal rebate. A hybrid inverter keeps that door open.
How we score inverters
Each datasheet value maps to 0 to 10 with the rule below. Your postcode and goals then adjust the weights.
- EfficiencyEvery point of efficiency is solar you keep, every day for 10+ years.Maximum efficiency on the datasheet: 96% scores 0, 99% scores 10.30%
- MPPTs for split roofsEach MPPT runs one roof face independently, so east and west panels don't drag each other down.Number of MPPT trackers: 1 scores 0, 2 scores 5, 3 or more scores 10.20%
- Heat toleranceInverters on hot walls throttle or fail early. A higher operating limit means more headroom.Highest operating temperature: 45°C scores 0, 60°C scores 10.20%
- Room for more panelsHow much panel capacity the inverter accepts, so you can oversize for winter and cloudy days.Maximum PV input divided by rated AC output: 1.2x scores 0, 1.5x or more scores 10. Rebate rules allow panels up to 133% of the inverter, so more than 150% adds little.15%
- Weather sealingMost Australian inverters live outdoors.IP66 or better scores 10, IP65 9, IP55 4, lower 0.15%
Gates first
A series must pass these before it's listed at all.
- Currently on the Clean Energy Council approved inverters list
- Manufacturer datasheet on file for the series
- Rated to the Australian grid standard AS/NZS 4777.2
Not in the score
- Whether it takes a battery. Hybrid and solar-only inverters do different jobs, so we show the type and let you filter by it rather than marking solar-only inverters down
- Price and installer workmanship
- Warranty length, which only 2% of the datasheets state (most brands publish it separately)
- App quality and monitoring, which we can't measure from a datasheet
- AC-coupled battery inverters, which do a different job and are listed without a rank

Questions about inverters.
How long do inverters last?
Typically 10 to 15 years, often less than the panels. Ask your installer for the warranty in writing and who services it locally.
Can I keep my old inverter and add a battery?
Yes, with an AC-coupled battery inverter. We list those separately because they do a different job from a solar inverter.
Does a bigger inverter mean more power?
Only if you have the panels to feed it. Size the inverter to the array, allowing for oversizing, and to your network's export rules.
