For most homes with solar and a decent evening load, yes. The federal rebate has shortened paybacks a lot. If you're out all day and use little power at night, solar alone may be the better buy for now.
Most Australian homes land between 6.6 and 10 kW. It depends on your daytime use, roof space and whether a battery or EV is coming. Panels can be oversized up to a third beyond the inverter, which is why 6.6 kW on a 5 kW inverter is so common.
A heat pump uses roughly a third of the electricity of a standard electric tank, and run off midday solar it can cost very little. In cold climates, check it heats without the backup element at your winter lows. We score that.
Every product must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list. Each series is then scored out of 10 from its datasheet and warranty documents, with published rules for things like heat performance, efficiency and how long the warranty really lasts. Brands are rated on their best products, track record, what installers choose and local support.
